Passports and Visas

It is very important that you check your passport is valid and in good condition before you travel. Most countries have entry requirements where a passport should be valid for 6 months after you are due to return to Great Britain or to leave that country.

It is also your responsibility to ensure that you have whatever Visa is required to enter the country you are travelling to. More information on visas is found below.

One good tip is to make copies of important travel documents and/or store them online using a secure data storage site.

British Nationals

Your British passport will need to be valid for the dates of travel and normally valid for at least 6 months after your return date. If your passport expires earlier than this time frame we strongly suggest you contact the consulate of the country you are travelling to and ask whether your passport will be accepted at security control.

Some countries may also physically stamp your passport on entry and exit and they will require a minimum of two empty pages to do that. You should check this requirement before travelling, especially if your passport is quite full.

For more information on British passports visit the UK passport office at www.gov.uk/browse/abroad/passports.

Visa RequirementsBritish Nationals do not require a visa to visit any country within the European Union. If you are travelling to a country outside of the European Union we strongly suggest you contact the consulate or embassy of the country you are travelling to (or go to their website) to find out whether you will require a visa for your trip. You can find more information about all foreign embassies and high commissions in the UK on the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website.

Trips to the USAThere are specific visa requirements for trips to the US and these are summarised below. For further information please visit the US Embassy's website.

If you're entering the US on the Visa Waiver Programme you now also need to complete an ESTA form online. This is available on the US Embassy's website. The US Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) allows most British passport holders to visit the USA for up to 90 days. The types of journeys that are permissible under the VWP include general travel/tourism, certain types of business and when transiting to another country.
