Health and Safety

Be Healthy

  • Don't forget your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for free or reduced emergency care in countries that are part of the European Economic Area (EEA). You will still need your own travel insurance to cover certain costs, so please do not rely on your EHIC to cover all medical costs when abroad.
  • Click here to check for the latest update on any outbreaks of disease or epidemics.
  • Ensure you have had all necessary vaccinations for all destinations you intend to travel to 6 weeks prior to departure.Click here for more information on vaccinations that you may need.
  • You can take whatever medication you may need when you travel in your hand luggage, however any medication must be kept in its original packaging with any prescription documents. You will have to check with the embassy of the country you are travelling to whether your medication is legal in that country, and whether you will need to take a doctor's certificate.
  • Food and Drink: If in doubt use bottled water and eat fresh, thoroughly cooked food that has just been cooked. It is sensible to avoid ice in drinks, unpeeled vegetables or fruits, food exposed to flies, undercooked /raw fish or shellfish, any dairy products that have not been properly refrigerated.

Stay Safe

Follow these tips to ensure a safe trip

  • Make a copy of your passport and other important documents before you go and store them separately from the originals when travelling (alternatively you can store them electronically so that you can access them from anywhere in the world).
  • Let a family member or friend know when and where you are travelling to, with a rough itinerary and your contact details.
  • Check for individual country travel advice on the Foreign and Commonwealth office website before you go.
  • Take care to follow local customs and dress code to experience a more enjoyable trip and ensure that you are not breaking any laws.
  • Always ask for permission before taking photographs or videos of anyone abroad, or using binoculars.
  • Do not openly display any valuables such as wallets / purses, money, jewellery, cameras or mobile phones.
